Daughters of the Apocalypse
WARNING: This series deals with weapons of mass destruction and extreme population loss. Please consider your tastes and headspace before deciding whether this is something you want to read.
This is post-apocalyptic hopepunk that takes place after natural disasters and warfare have cut the human population to a fraction of its former size. What remains is a world primarily populated by women, people of color, and queerfolk.
The apocalypse began with natural disasters, hordes of refugees, and then wars over what was left. These are known as X-risks, global catastropic risks, or existential risks, which could greatly curtail or even wipe out civilization or humanity itself. There are also S-risks that concern astronomical suffering. That buildup ended with chemical warfare which wiped out most of the adults, since "the Grunge" (GR#63) was designed to attack healthy bodies in their prime: people who were or could be soldiers. It targeted those typically valued the most so the lowest survival rate was among straight, white, able-bodied men. Children and the elderly were less affected than adults, women and intersex people less than men, queerfolk less than straight, and people of color less than white. This totally changed the demographics among survivors.
Previous political entities have largely broken down in the Aftermath. However, it's recent enough that many partial borders remain, as the newly forming territories often follow some of the old lines. Between the wars, environmental hazards, and the Grunge all of the major cities were effectively wiped out and no longer safe. That doesn't stop a few people from trying to get in and scavenge things, but cities are no longer population centers. Settlements are now communes. A few predate the End; more sprang up outside the ruined cities. Most Native American reservations survived.
Before the End, a lot of North American wildlife and wilderness was beaten nearly to death. To nature, though, the End was really a new beginning. Just 15 years A.E. the rebound is already well underway. Many native species have made small or large recoveries. Compare this with Chernobyl after 15 years and 33 years. Some domestic animals, and a few exotic ones, have also survived.
By 15 A.E. most vehicles have been converted to renewable fuels such as ethanol and/or electricity. Older vehicles are often preferred because they are sturdier and easier to repair than fancy modern ones. Housetrucks and recreational vehicles are popular for caravans. Their cargo capacity and living space make up for the poor mileage efficiency. Roads and signs have degraded dramatically, more in some places than others.
