Walking the Beat
This series began with a request for a lesbian couple, one of whom is Deaf and the other walks with a cane, fighting crime together. I figured they would need a creative approach to that goal, so what they do is neighborhood improvement and activism. Kelly and Dale live in Jamaica Plain, in Boston. I was surprised by how many of my readers know the area and chimed in with further information about it. The series has drawn local color from the neighborhood, its religious and cultural centers, restaurants and other establishments, etc. One poem became two, and so it goes ...
