How to Write Serial Poetry

Picture
I volunteered to host a week for the Poetree
community, on the topic of serial poetry.  A
quick search turned up almost no information
online, and what little I found was flawed.  So
I wrote this batch of articles and poem guides
to fill the gap.

"What Is Serial Poetry?"
An introduction to the field of sequential verse.

"The Shared World as Serial Literature"
Explore how collaborative settings facilitate serial poetry.

"The Return of the Series"
Serial literature has been popular in the past, then faded away, and now rises again.

"Structural Considerations in Serial Poetry: Foundations"
Learn about the underlying concepts of storytelling through linked poems.  Explore types of series, continuity, and transitions.

"Structural Considerations in Serial Poetry: Infrastructure"
Learn about the basic building blocks of narrative poetry.  These include character, setting, theme, and repetition.

"How Poet and Audience Build a Series"
Explore the enjoyment of poetry and the conversation between writer and audience.  Learn what you can do for serial poetry -- and what it can do for you.  Think about how these factors influence the answers to questions and decisions posed in the previous two sections about structural considerations.

"So You Want to Start a Series"
Investigate the stages of creating a new poetic series.  Decide what you want to write about, pencil in the main elements, write some poetry, revise it, release it, and work on attracting an audience.

"Further Samples of Serial Poetry"
Read some more series by different poets.

See also my Serial Poetry page for examples of my own sequential verse.
